It is with profound sadness that we inform you that Brian Norris, one of our long-time members, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 2nd.  Brian was an avid canoe paddler with a great passion for the sport.  He was a quiet man who was also a fierce competitor, a patient coach and teacher, a great team member, an unwavering supporter of the Club, and the 2020 recipient of Viking’s Weimer Award.

Brian started his paddling career at the Cartierville Canoe Club in the early 1960s in Junior war canoe, earning his way into smaller boats. He competed at the 1967 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, bringing home a gold medal in C-2 10,000m; continued on in his long C2 paddling career with Bill Robert; and was part of the C-4 team in Dartmouth in 1988 that took home the John W. Black Trophy.  His wins and medals throughout the years are too numerous to mention.  This year would have been Brian’s 25th season with Viking.

He will be sorely missed by Viking and by many in the greater paddling community, which he was a part of for over 60 years.

Let her run Brian…..

The Club was founded in 2001 and in 23 years has won the Canadian National Team Masters Championships seven times and participated in other competitions, including three in Canada, Australia, and Italy. Wilma and Trish enthusiastically present the Club’s many activities for adults and children, such as sprint kayak and canoe boating, dragon boating, para-canoe for the physically disabled, PaddleAll for the intellectually disabled, youth camp, regattas, and recreational and competitive programs.  All their coaches are certified and the Club provides all equipment.  As Trish says, “Bring your enthusiasm and dry clothes.”  Wilma mentions that the Club is for young and old, offering fitness, fun, camaraderie, and passion for these water sports.

Their telephone number is 450-226- 1876
